One of the highlights in the eye of Tourism Saskatoon for the Bridge City in 2019 was hosting the FIBA 3×3 Basketball World Tour.
2019 marked the third and final year of an agreement between FIBA and Tourism Saskatoon to host the event at the corner of 4th Avenue and 21st Street.
Stephanie Clovechok, Vice-President of Tourism Saskatoon says the event brought many community members to downtown to see world-class basketball with some locals playing including Michael Linklater.
In addition to hosting the FIBA event, SaskTel Centre was home to the first ever Canadian Elite Basetball League Championship weekend which Clovechok says is quite exciting with the home team Saskatchewan Rattlers taking home the championship in the league’s inaugural season.
Clovechok says the championship weekend was a great opportunity for the city to demonstrate its strengths not only in athletics but in its hosting capacity.
She says 2020 will also be an exciting year with the JUNO Awards coming back to the Bridge City for the first time in 13 years. Clovechok says the event is something their team has worked very hard on.
“It takes a lot work for us to bring these events into the city and once they’re here, it takes a lot of work to for the on the ground committee to execute it.”
When looking back at 2019, Clovechok says having the Amazing Race Canada visit Saskatoon was another highlight.
She says the Amazing Race Canada is in touch with them on an annual basis to see how they can incorporate new places in the city into the show.
