A family from Kandahar, Afghanistan now owns 8 lots in Kandahar, Saskatchewan.
Abdul Jamal and his family moved to Canada in 1990 and the discovery of Kandahar, Saskatchewan sparked a longing for his homeland, prompting him to buy land there for his adult children. The Jamal family’s journey to the Saskatchewan community with a population of about 15 is the subject of a documentary tonight on the documentary Channel called A Kandahar Away.
The filmmaker is Abdul Jamal’s daughter, Aisha. She says the biggest surprise for her was that the streets were all named after places in Afghanistan.
Jamal says the film highlights their trip of discovery and general differences in the family. Owning a plot of land in a small community is not necessarily what the children wanted for an inheritance. She explains that generational differences are a part of most families, because what’s happening around you can shape how you feel about things.
The program first airs tonight (Sun) at 7 on the documentary Channel with more viewings through Tuesday.
