Several places across the country have heat warnings in place including the northwestern corner of Saskatchewan.
Environment Canada has issued heat warnings in La Loche and Uranium City. The weather office says temperatures reaching 30 degrees combined with overnight lows of 15 degrees are expected over the next four days.
Stephen Vallee with Environment Canada says a ridge of high pressure is entering the western prairies bringing warm air. Vallee says the heat warnings will likely expand east towards the Manitoba border over the next couple of days.
He adds heat warnings will also likely be issued in more communities further south including La Ronge, possibly all the way down to the Prince Albert area in the upcoming days. Out on the east coast, humidex values are expected to be in the 40’s Sunday.
The high in Uranium City is expected to by 29 degrees Sunday while in La Loche the mercury is also expected to hit plus 29. Vallee says it’s not uncommon for the northern communities to be under a heat warning. He says it happens about twice a year during the summer.
Environment Canada says extreme heat affects everyone, although the risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.
