Statistics Canada released its June Field Crop Survey Wednesday. Saskatchewan farmers reported seeding less canola and durum, but more spring lentils and dry peas.
Producers in Saskatchewan seeded 11.6 million acres of canola in 2019, down 6.5% compared to 2018. This is the second consecutive decline since the record 12.7 million acres in 2017.
The area seeded to all wheat varieties decreased 0.6% in 2019 to 12.9 million acres. Spring wheat area rose 11.1% to 8.7 million acres, while durum wheat fell 17.8% to 4.1 million acres.
Saskatchewan farmers reported seeding 3.4 million acres of lentils in 2019, an increase of 1.3% from last year’s 3.3 million acres. Producers reported sowing 2.3 million acres to dry field peas this year, up 20.7% from 2018.
The total area seeded to barley grew to 3.2 million acres in 2019, up 17.0% from last year. Total acreage sown to oats jumped to 1.8 million acres this year, up 27.8% from 2018.
Farmers reported more acres seeded to flaxseed in 2019, up 0.9% to 727,500 acres.
The area planted to canary seed decreased 3.8% this year to 183,400 acres, now the lowest area since 1987.
