BullyingCanada is in contact with tens of thousands of youth who reach out every year.
Spokesperson for the non-profit group, James Ryan, wonders how many more don’t reach out and instead internalize their issues. Youth who are bullied can contact BullyingCanada by phone, email, real-time online chat and most recently, by text.
Ryan explains that the volunteers talk to the youth and counsel them, but the organization also makes sure these kids get the follow-up care they need. That means talking with bullied youth and families, bullies and parents, teachers, counselors, principals, school boards, local social services and even police if necessary.
There are over 200 trained volunteers supporting youth but with the addition of texting, Ryan estimates they need another 50 to 100 volunteers. If you think this is something you would be interested in, you can volunteer your time for 4 to 5 hours a month or more. BullyingCanada will provide free training in support, suicide prevention, mediation skills, problem solving and the requirements on confidentiality.
