Encounters with coyotes or deer are more likely around Saskatoon with the arrival of spring.
The Resource Management Officer with the Meewasin Valley Authority says close encounters between people and wildlife are happening around the Northeast Swale.
Renny Grilz points out other areas to watch out for are north of the university near the Circle Drive Bridge, along the riverbank in Silverwood Heights as well as just outside the city at Cranberry Flats.
Coyotes and their pups as well as deer and their young are starting to come out with the warmer weather.
Grilz advises to keep dogs on leashes or near-by in off-leash areas and establish eye contact if a coyote is close.
Grilz says they will leave in most cases but make noise if they don’t and get louder if the animal comes closer, but don’t run away.
He says preventative measures in established neighborhoods include removing compost and fallen fruit from backyards while keeping pets inside.
In addition to coyotes and deer, Grilz says he has seen ducks and geese laying eggs.
