Thanks to the support of the federal and provincial governments, Habitat for Humanity and the help of some high school students, two Saskatchewan families will have a new place to call home in Saskatoon’s Meadowgreen neighbourhood by the end of the year.
On Friday, both levels of government along Habitat announced the construction of a duplex located at 311 and 313 Avenue W South. Both the federal and provincial governments are contributing $130 thousand dollars to build the duplex while grade 10, 11 and 12 students at the high school in Langham are helping build the shell of the new homes that will then be placed on top of the basements on Avenue W. Barb Cox-Lloyd, the CEO of Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon says there’s a plan in place for the families to pay for their new home.
“The families actually do 500 hours of sweat equity and they take on a no-interest mortgage for the price of the home and it’s the fair market value. They take on a no-interest mortgage that we handle so they pay 25 per cent of their income into that mortgage until it’s paid off.”
Each unit will have four bedrooms totalling approximately 1,500 square feet. The two units are expected to be completed by the end of 2019.
