Shots were fired in an incident last night (thurs) that resulted in RCMP shutting down a portion of Highway 4 and issuing a warning for the public to stay away. Around 7:15, officers responded to a report of an erratic driver. While en route, they learned the driver was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for parole violations. Officers attempted a traffic stop but the vehicle fled. The pursuit took place on grid roads and on Highway 4 before a spike belt stopped the vehicle. At that point, RCMP allege the driver shot at police. An officer returned fire before realizing there were other people in the vehicle. The vehicle then took off again but police were able to stop it a second time. That’s when the occupants jumped out and took off. A containment area was set up in an area bordering the south side of Battle River. Police say their suspects managed to get a ride from a motorist in the area. That vehicle was stopped on Highway 29 just south of Battleford where the wanted person they were after was taken into custody without incident. No one was hurt. Officers are now gathering evidence in the area but all traffic restrictions have been lifted.
