Watch for more traffic cameras in Saskatchewan in the future.
SGI is accepting applications for Provincial Traffic Safety Fund grants and new Photo Speed Enforcement locations from municipalities, First Nations, and the Ministry of Highways.
During the pilot project, which began in 2014 with official ticketing beginning in March of 2015, there were 8 cameras rotated through 28 different sites.
A Photo Speed Enforcement report from SGI indicates there were around 28 fewer collisions at the camera locations per year, meaning an estimated 40 fewer injuries per year.
Driving speeds went down in the camera locations.
For instance, SGI reports that on Circle Drive in Saskatoon with a speed limit of 90 km/h, the average speed was almost 98 km/h and after the camera was installed, it was 86, for a reduction of almost 12 per cent.
The largest change was Highway 12 near Martensville with a posted speed limit of 90 and the average at almost 105 km/h.
After photo enforcement, the average speed clocked in at 87, for a reduction of almost 17 per cent.
