Earlier this month, a coroner’s inquest into the death of 22 year old Brydon Whitstone, who was shot by a Battlefords RCMP officer during a pursuit, deemed the cause undetermined and now the RCMP has announced its internal review results.
Manitoba RCMP examined the shooting, saying there was one procedural gap, which Saskatchewan RCMP don’t believe would have had any impact on the investigation of Whitstone’s death.
The policy is for all officers involved to be separated immediately after a critical incident.
Constable Jerry Abbott was separated from the scene but all the other officers removed from the scene still had the opportunity to come together for a well being debrief for almost 2-and-a-half hours, where officers are offered mental health support services.
The recommendation from the review is for members and supervisors to be retold of the importance in keeping involved officers separated and they shouldn’t discuss events in regards to a serious incident.
A statement from the Saskatchewan RCMP: “Policing can be a difficult and demanding profession. At times it calls for split-second, life-or-death decisions to be made under great duress. It is a heavy burden of responsibility that our officers carry, but it is a responsibility that we train for and that we take seriously.”
