Saskatchewan’s finance minister believes the current equalization system is “extremely flawed” and needs to be revamped, but Ottawa doesn’t want to hear that message.
Donna Harpauer says it is a message some of her provincial counterparts have brought forth, but is also one that is seemingly being ignored.
Harpauer says the Saskatchewan government has put a plan on the table very similar to the health transfers provinces get from the feds which would be much better than the current formula.
Saskatchewan received zero dollars in equalization, but with this formula they would get 300 million dollars. Harpauer says that money would go a long ways to helping balance the budget.
