The Meewasin Valley Authority was happy to see funding from the City of Saskatoon at just over $1.2-million dollars in the 2019 budget and additional funding of $100-thousand for emergencies as part of the permanent funding. $225-thousand goes toward trail development and $45-thousand for operating the outdoor rink in downtown Saskatoon.
Meewasin CEO, Andrea Lafond, says they aren’t back to where they were before the economic downturn with funding from the province and the University of Saskatchewan, but they are able to maintain status quo and are prioritizing strategies to enhance their funding support.
She explains that Meewasin isn’t just about a trail along the riverbank.
It’s conservation, addressing invasive species, bringing back natural plants and wildlife habitat, but also creating the balance between human use and nature.
It also includes programs at Beaver Creek, the Northeast Swale and Saskatoon Natural Grasslands.
Meewasin is a registered charity, and those interested can donate online or at the office on Third Avenue South.
Preparations have begun for the Cameco Skating rink at Nutrien Plaza.
The big kickoff Twinkle Light Skating Party is scheduled for December 18th, but Lafond expects they may be able to open a bit before that.
