Amendments to the Workers’ Compensation Board Act were introduced in the legislature today (Tues) which widens coverage, in particular for firefighters.
Six new cancers were added to the occupational presumptive coverage list for firefighters including prostate, skin, breast, cervical and ovarian cancer and multiple myeloma.
Saskatchewan Professional Firefighters Association President Lloyd Zwack considers this an important day for firefighters across the province.
He appreciates that the government recognizes the hazards faced every day by firefighters as they run toward danger, and also the occupational diseases related to their chosen profession.
Saskatoon based firefighter Shauna Baccus says it’s really just a matter of time before they get cancer, with the type of carcinogens they deal with on a daily basis. Justice Minister Don Morgan says they want female firefighters to be covered the same way men are. (CKRM)
