Sixty per cent of people who responded said yes when we asked, on the cjwwradio.com newspoll question, “Do you think there should be a financial penalty to vehicle owners whose vehicles are stolen when they leave the keys inside?”
However, the province’s insurance authority isn’t proposing financial penalties for people whose cars are stolen with the keys in them, at least, not right now. The matter came up in 2017, when S-G-I publicly talked about insurance consequences for cars stolen under those circumstances.
Spokesman Tyler McMurchy says there’s been a big spike in auto theft claims in the last five years, this last one being the peak. McMurchy says they hope ongoing enforcement and awareness efforts will instead take effect. (CKRM)
