An annual event that families registered with Autism Services look forward to is coming up on Saturday. It’s the annual Skating With Santa event at Archibald Arena. Director of Family Programs with Autism Services, Alex Scott, says it gives the children an opportunity to get out in a group and interact with others, and to have a skate with Santa Claus and possibly Mrs. Claus as well. It’s free for families who have a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder, but you’ve got to register with Autism Services ahead of time. Scott says according to the most recent statistics, the prevalence of autism is on the rise. In Canada, 1 in 66 children will be diagnosed. Scott believes there is more awareness about ASD, so that may be part of the reason, but he also believes the number of people with the disorder is increasing.
