For the first time in more than five years, no Canadian province ranked in the top 10 most attractive jurisdictions for oil and gas investment. Saskatchewan fell from 7th spot last year to 18th this year. The annual global survey of petroleum sector executives by the Fraser Institute shows Alberta and British Columbia ranked as the least attractive jurisdictions in Canada. That’s the second year in a row for them. Regulations, taxes, and a lack of pipeline capacity are said to be taking their toll on Canada’s energy sector. On the global scale, BC ranked 58th; Alberta fell from 14th place to 43rd. Manitoba was the top-ranked province and placed 16th overall. Co-author Ashley Stedman says, “Policymakers at the federal and provincial levels must be aware of the impact their decisions have on attracting or deterring valuable investment dollars.”
