A group of small lakes near the Town of Unity has a new name to honour Indigenous culture, replacing the previous name of Killsquaw Lake.
The new name is a Cree phrase which means We Honour the Women (Kikiskitotawanawak Iskewak Lakes), as given by area Elders.
Kellie Wuttunee from the Red Pheasant First Nation submitted the nomination for the name change, who says words are powerful, names are powerful, and actions like this tell the world we can learn from our mistakes and move forward.
The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations applauds the efforts of a dedicated group of Elders, Chiefs and First Nations lobbyists from the two Tribal Councils in the Battlefords’ area for successfully petitioning the province to approve the name change.
