What ends up in recycling bins that shouldn’t be there has some seasonal differences, but mostly the contaminants are broken glass and garbage. Jenna Curson with Loraas says at certain times of the year books and binders will be found in the blue bins, at other times it’s Christmas lights and at other times it’s clothing. This past summer, Loraas and the City of Saskatoon conducted a blue bin blitz and found that there is 14 per cent less decontamination than there was when the program began 4 years ago.
The majority of households with the blue bins are recycling the correct items at 68 per cent. Those that needed some education had either more than 10 per cent contamination in their bins or at least one dangerous item. Curson gives the example of a box full of shotgun shells which was found in one bin.
