As the cold weather moves in, Deschambault Lake RCMP are reminding people to be ice-smart when heading out onto the ice for things like fishing, snowmobiling and skating. Ice should be 15cm thick before you walk or skate on it. It should be 25 cm thick for snowmobiling, and 30 cm before you drive on it. Clear, blue ice is strong ice. White or grey ice is not as strong. Stay away if it looks slushy, has thawed and refrozen, is near moving water, or is near a pressure crack. You should also not go out onto the ice alone. You should carry safety gear such as ice picks, poles, and ropes, as well as a first-aid kit that includes cold-weather supplies.
