Saskatchewan Huskies forward Wyatt Johnson has been named Canada West-WHL second star of the week.
The former Red Deer Rebel captain had two goals and two assists in last Friday’s 4-2 win over Regina. Johnson is tied for seventh in Canada West men’s hockey scoring with eight points in six games leaving him two points off the conference lead.
Meanwhile two member of the Women’s Soccer team have been named to the Canada West all-rookie team. They are midfielders Peyton Izsac of Prince Albert and Haley Mercier of Saskatoon.

Brandon Magee made his season debut over the weekend, as the former Victoria Royal scored a trio of goals over a pair of games for the Alberta Golden Bears.
Magee, who played more than 300 WHL regular season games over five full seasons of junior, scored once in Alberta’s 4-3 loss Friday, before netting a pair of goals Saturday in a 4-1 Bears win.
The Arts student from Edmonton, Alta. has 27 points in 27 career CW regular season games after registering 264 points in 318 career WHL regular season games.

Former Red Deer Rebels captain Wyatt Johnson had a big night Friday against the Regina Cougars, registering two goals and two assists in Saskatchewan’s 4-2 win over their provincial rivals.
Johnson and the Huskies also found the win column Saturday, as they improved their record to 7-1-0 on the season, which is good for first in the conference.
The Business student is currently tied for seventh in CW scoring with eight points in six games – just two points back of the conference lead through the first month of the season.

Rookie forward Regan Nagy notched his first career Canada West goals over the weekend, scoring in both of Calgary’s wins over the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
Nagy opened the scoring Friday in Calgary’s 4-1 win over the Pronghorns in Lethbridge, before scoring an insurance marker early in the third period in Saturday’s 3-0 win for the Dinos in the Stampede City.
The Arts student joined the Dinos in the summer after spending four-plus seasons in the WHL, mostly with the Victoria Royals, before finishing up his junior career in Prince Albert with the Raiders.

Huskies duo named to conference All-Rookie Team

EDMONTON – With the Canada West Women’s Soccer Final Four set to open this Friday at Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C., the conference unveiled its all-stars and all-rookies Wednesday.
While the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s soccer team won’t be taking part in the Final Four, they still received some recognition for their outstanding 2018-19 season today.
Both Haley Mercier and Payton Izsak were named to the Canada West All-Rookie Team after strong starts to their Huskies career.
Starting in 14 of the Huskies’ 16 games this season, Haley Mercier was a force in the middle of the midfield all season long. The native of Saskatoon ended the season with two points, 21 shots on goal and 1,213 minutes played.
Beginning the season in a central role before flourishing as a striker near the end, Payton Izsak played a large role in the Huskies reaching the Canada West Quarter-finals.
The Kinesiology major scored six goals, two in the playoffs, and fired 18 shots towards net in the 1,103 minutes that she was on the pitch this season.
The all-star and all-rookie teams were selected by the conference’s 16 women’s soccer head coaches, who also vote on the conference’s major awards, which will be released Thursday.
Leading the all-star charge were the Calgary Dinos, who had five players named to the conference’s first all-star team. Goalkeeper Lauren Houghton, who set the CW single-season record for shutouts (11) and wins (13) this season, was joined on the first team by teammates Talia White (D), Kayla Kreutzer (D), Montana Leonard (F), and Maddison Fritze (F).
Dino Sofia Mondaca (F) was also named an all-rookie, rounding out Calgary’s impressive list of honourees.
Combined, the Final Four schools had 18 players honoured as all-stars or all-rookies: Calgary (6), TWU (5), UBC (4), and Alberta (3).

Baikas earns double CW honours

EDMONTON – Rookie midfielder Nikolas Baikas made quite the impression in his first season of action with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s soccer team, it was announced today that the native of Saskatoon was named both a Canada West Second Team All-Star and to the All-Rookie team.
Baikas led the team with five goals and finished the regular season third in the conference with six assists. The Arts & Science major also fired 21 shots on goal in the 1,159 minutes that he played this season.
The all-star and all-rookie teams were selected by the conference’s 13 men’s soccer head coaches, who also vote on the conference’s major awards, which will be released Thursday.
Ahead of hosting the Canada West Men’s Soccer Final Four this weekend, the UBC Thunderbirds had a total of 10 players honoured as conference all-stars, or all-rookies Wednesday.
UBC went 13-1-2 during the regular season and will host this weekend’s four-team conference tournament, where one team will earn the right to join the ‘Birds as a CW representative at the U SPORTS national tournament. UBC is set to host that event November 8-11.
