The Pasqua First Nation has reason to celebrate.
The people of Pasqua First Nation #79 approved compensation of $145-million by a 97 per cent in favour vote.
It was June 5th of this year when this amount was offered to settle the First Nation’s 1987 Surrender Claim.
There were originally over 38-thousand acres of land on what was then called the Pasqa Indian Reserve in 1876.
On June 5th of 1906, over 16-thousand acres of prime agricultural land was unlawfully surrendered.
In 1987 and 1995, Pasqua filed claims against the surrender, but the federal government rejected them, then in 1997 the Supreme Court confirmed that the Crown had to pay for that land.
There were dealings between then and 2016, and that was when on June 5th of that year, Canada accepted a re-submitted claim for settlement, which has now been accepted.
