From skating to face painting, it was all taking place at the new Merlis Belsher Place Saturday. That’s because Saturday happened to be the facility’s official grand opening with the public invited to come out and try sledge hockey and skate on the new ice surface. Dave King who didn’t only play for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies but also coached the team was among those who came out to see the new arena. He says not only will the arena provide benefits to those at the U of S but to the city as a whole. King points to the fact that the facility will host a variety of sporting events other than hockey including ringette, speed skating and figure skating. The facility replaces the 89 year old Rutherford Rink where the U of S Huskies teams use to call home.
Merlis Belsher Place cost $51 million dollars to construct and will be the new home for Huskies hockey.
