The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is concerned that arming conservation officers with assault rifles could mean more lives lost in rural Saskatchewan.
Vice Chief Heather Bear says many are still healing from the death of Colten Boushie, and now the province wants conservation officers carrying assault rifles. She calls this decision disturbing and unnecessary.
Bear believes there are officers who need more education about Inherent and Treaty Rights, and some may have negative views based on their lack of education regarding these Rights.
The FSIN learned about the plans to arm conservation officers with assault rifles through an online tender.
Bear says First Nations communities “will not stand idly” by as the province chips away at the lands on which they can hunt and the manners in which they carry out those rights.
