The Star-Orion South Diamond Mine has received environmental assessment approval from the provincial government. However, the James Smith Cree Nation says the mine will adversely affect their treaty rights and culture. Chief Wally Burns says, “The way things stand, everyone else gets the benefits of a mine while we are left with all the consequences.” The Ministry of the Environment says that it conducted a thorough environmental assessment that included consultation with First Nations and Metis communities. The assessment approval means the project, located about 65 kilometers east of Prince Albert, can now proceed with the next phase. The province says the mine is expected to employ 700 people once it is fully operational. But Burns says there will be no mine until the First Nation’s interests are satisfied.
