The Star-Orion South Diamond Mine has received environmental assessment approval from the provincial government. That means it can now proceed with the next phase of its project located about 65 kilometers east of Prince Albert. Environment Minister Dustin Duncan says the mine is, “A major development with the potential to bring jobs to the area and diversify Saskatchewan’s economy.” The government says the mine is expected to employ 700 people once it is fully operational. The Ministry of the Environment says that it conducted a thorough environmental assessment that included a 60 day public review period and consultation with First Nations and Metis communities. Before the company can proceed with the project it will have to obtain further provincial and municipal permits and approvals.
