Two members of the STARS air medical crew based in Saskatoon won an International competition recently. Flight nurse Jenny Thorpe and flight paramedic Matt Hogan represented STARS at the annual critical car skills contest during a conference this week in Phoenix, Arizona. There were 12 teams from across North America competing, using real situation skills in front of a panel of judges and a live audience from the conference. The scenarios were complex. The final case consisted of 5 casualties from a climbing accident in a remote area of the Arizona desert, complete with aggressive coyotes and venemous snakes. Hogan says, “communication, patient triage and care prioritization were tested to the maximum, but we made it through with a lot of sweat and fantastic team work!”
