After another lengthy debate at City Hall on “pay as you throw” and a mandatory organics program, one thing is certain and that is single-family homes will indeed be receiving a green organics bin in the future.
The vote was 7-4 with councillors Hill, Davies, Iwanchuk and Dubois opposed.
The question now remains how will the organics program be funded.
City Council elected to move the decision on how organics and waste services will be funded to November’s council meeting.
The options are to either have the services collected through a waste utility bill or through property taxes which is the current method used for waste collection today.
With more reports coming forward from city administration next month on the matters, additional information was requested from council to help further the discussion on how the waste collection system will be paid for.
Some of the information being requested includes clarifying research on green bin contamination if the funding was to be collected through property taxes and waste as a utility.
Council also approved a motion made by Councillor Loewen to indicate on the request for proposals for organics processing that the city intends to have multi-family housing organics running by 2020 as well.
