The city’s transportation committee voted 3-2 in favour to consider developing a strategy that could see the speed limit on residential streets be lowered in Tuesday’s meeting.
Two other motions were also passed in the debate including consideration to develop a strategy that could reduce speeds in school and playground areas and that administration report back to see what options could be available to possibly develop “senior zones” in communities that have a high senior population like the Nutana Suburban Centre. Councillor Dubois was the one to make the “senior zones” motion. She says the reasoning is to protect the elderly given that Nutana is home to many seniors. Councillor Donauer was one of the councillors opposed to the idea of looking further into reducing speed limits on residential streets. He says doesn’t see a big out call from the public to reduce speeds in neighbourhoods and that he hasn’t personally experienced any need to reduce the speed. No exact speed limit is being recommended at this time and the motions will now make their way to City Council for final approval.
