And so begins October. The month with Thanksgiving and Halloween. If you live in Saskatoon, residential garbage pickup now switches from weekly to every second week. That’s the black bins, not to be confused with the blue bins for recycling that are always emptied every second week. I don’t even want to think about what the future holds as my house may end up with three bins, one for garbage that would be in one of three sizes, large, medium or small, one for certain recyclable materials, and one for organics. I assume the garbage bin in whatever size will still be black and the recycle bin blue so they’d have to pick a different colour for the bin for organic waste. I hope it’ll be green. Red, orange or yellow would be too gaudy and, after all, this is Saskatchewan. I believe pickups will all be bi-weekly year round and that means I’ll have to get very good at remembering what day what gets picked up on what week. Oh joy. I’m all for extending the life of the landfill and certainly for saving money. That’s my money I mean. There is a debate about whether we would be paying for garbage collection through user fees on what they call a “pay as you throw” basis, or just keep it embedded in our city utility bill. And I’m not sure if that includes recyclables and organics. Frankly, it’s all a bit confusing. I never studied waste management in school and I never realized garbage could become so complicated. I guess we should count ourselves lucky that our waste gets taken away and disposed of on our behalf.
That’s Coffeetalk. I’m Vic Dubois.
