Bit by bit, the City of Saskatoon’s water meter change out program continues to move forward. To date, the city has installed 43% of its communications module installations. That basically means the little black pucks are now replaced with a grey square module which the city, in the past, has stressed is not a smart meter but an attachment to the current meter. When we last checked, in March, the change-out was about a third complete. These meters will be read remotely using wireless communication and it is mandatory for all of Saskatoon’s water meters. As of September 1st this year, 32,107 meters had been installed. In total the city plans to have 74,123 meters online in three years. The cost at last estimate was $12.7 million.
