Every Child Matters. That’s the message for Orange Shirt Day tomorrow (Sun), which recognizes the effects of the residential school system and moving forward in the spirit of reconciliation.
There are events around the country, and one in Saskatoon starts at 8 in the morning with participants in the River Run Classic wearing orange in tribute.
A group of survivors will participate in the walk and members of Saskatchewan Aboriginal Track and Field, many of them children of survivors, will be running in the event.
The day comes from a story of residential school survivor who as a young girl had her shiny, new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school.
Her hair was cut and she was de-loused but all she wanted was her orange shirt back.
Aboriginal Relations Director with the City of Saskatoon, Gilles Dorval, says there is also a free pancake breakfast tomorrow at 10 at the Western Development Museum with some special guest speakers, to honour Orange Shirt Day and kick off the final day of Metis Cultural Days.lace
