“Life after the Indian Act: Is your Community Ready?” is the theme of a conference tomorrow (Thurs) in Saskatoon. Regina based First Nations lawyer Josh Morrison says organizers set up the conference because conditions laid out by the Federal Government are favourable for self-government negotiations. Morrison says Ottawa will provide some funding for negotiations and implementation of self-government agreements but points out it’s a complex process and the conference is geared to advise communities on how to proceed. He feels there is a chance for First Nations communities to strike deals unique to them and says there are examples of agreements that have been economic successes after getting out from under the restrictions of the Indian Act. The conference is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Wanuskewin Heritage Park.
