The Governance and Priorities Committee has voted in favour to move ahead with implementing a visual bag inspection at City Hall for all visitors and employees entering the council chambers or committee rooms with the exception of the media, elected officials and some members of the administration.
Councillor Hilary Gough made a motion that passed to add community associations so that they would also be clear of receiving bag checks.
All bags including backpacks, briefcases, purses, packages or any other bulky items will be subject to inspection if City Council approves the amendments to the use of council chambers and committee rooms.
The new measures if approved by Council are expected to cost $7,000 dollars a year with an additional one-time cost of $2,200 for the equipment and communication materials that are required.
Bags are expected to be inspected a table just outside of council chambers and if given the green light by City Council, the changes are expected to take place November 1st.
