With the Saskatchewan Health Authority issuing layoff notices for 33 workers at the Grenfell Pioneer Home, many who happen to be CUPE Local 5340 members has the union saying that there’s a lot of uncertainty for CUPE members and for residents of Grenfell following the notices. The Health Authority is relocating 20 residents of the Grenfell Pioneer Home due to mould and asbestos being found in the building. Sandra Seitz, President of CUPE Local 5430 says the future of the facility is up in the air as well as job security for many CUPE Local 5430 members.
Seitz adds that all could have been avoided if the provincial government adequately maintained health care facilities.
The Grenfell Pioneer Home isn’t the only long-term care facility in Saskatchewan facing serious health risks dureto mould.
The Pioneer Village in Regina had to move nearly 100 residents due to serious mould issues in the spring.
