The Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre serves nearly 20-thousand people a month and almost half of those who rely on the emergency food basket program are children.
Sharing the stories of how communities are trying to solve hunger and encouraging people to get involved is what Hunger Action Month is all about through Food Banks Canada.
The Saskatoon Food Bank’s Executive Director, Laurie O’Connor, says September is about bringing awareness and taking action, whether as an individual, a group or a business.
For instance, you could donate, do a food drive or volunteer.
Canpotex is taking action to fight child hunger in Saskatoon, matching donations to the Milk for Children program up to $50-thousand.
O’Connor says along with addressing the emergency need for food, it’s also important to think about the root causes of poverty and take action against why people are living in poverty and are suffering from hunger.
