There is an El Nino weather system brewing and we could be seeing a warmer and drier than average fall in Saskatchewan.
Accuweather meteorologist Brett Anderson explains that above normal temperatures are forecast for most of the country, and climate change factors into that.
It also means an extended wildfire season for British Columbia, so the western provinces can expect more smoke haze.
The fall forecast predicts the southern prairies to be dry, which helps to get the crop off, but Anderson cautions that there are also drought concerns.
It is increasingly common to see above normal temperatures.
Using dice as a model, Anderson explains that in the 1980s three sides of the dice would be below normal and three sides would be above normal, but now it’s four sides above normal and 2 sides for below.
An El Nino weather system is developing in the Pacific Ocean, and if that continues to strengthen, Anderson predicts we will also have a milder winter.
