A Saskatoon Police officer has been dismissed from service with three Criminal Code charges against him from three different incidents.
Police Chief Troy Cooper made the decision even though the judicial process hasn’t been completed, to maintain the public’s trust.
Former Constable Jarett Gelowitz was charged with Aggravated Assault and Common Assault from on-duty actions in two separate incidents, while he was already facing Common Assault charges for an incident in December of 2016.
On January 22nd of 2017 a man was arrested after being pursued on foot and allegedly received minor injuries during his arrest.
There were concerns identified by the SPS Use of Force Committee and the Public Complaints Commission was notified, leading to a Common Assault charge against Jarett Gelowitz.
The Aggravated Assault is from an alleged incident in April of last year where two men were found in a suspected stolen vehicle and officers attempted to stop them, receiving what were originally thought to be minor injuries, but it turns out the driver’s injuries were more serious, leading to an investigation. Chief Troy Cooper said due process was followed and reported to the public as quickly as possible.
Gelowitz had been on administrative duties since December 28th 2017, but has now been dismissed before going through the court process.
He has 30 days from his notice of dismissal to file an appeal.
Jarett Gelowitz is expected to appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court on September 13th.
