Officers need to know both the federal and provincial regulations when it comes to the legalization of marijuana and training is underway, including new online training for all Canadian Police officers. Saskatoon Police Chief Troy Cooper says it’s something his officers will be taking advantage of, but it isn’t their only resource. Each province has its own regulations when it comes to the buying and selling of marijuana, so provincial training is also a part of the equation. What is of most importance, Cooper says, is for officers to understand what has changed and what the new laws are, in particular around driving and how to detect drug impaired driving. In Saskatchewan, there will be zero tolerance for all drug-impaired drivers and the minimum age will be 19. The Saskatoon Police Service is also developing a policy as an employer, which will deal with guidelines around marijuana for its staff.
