The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations says the recent suicide of a young Fond du Lac firefighter and front line volunteer worker shows mental health supports in Far North communities are not enough. Right now, minimal mental health staff are flown in weekly, according to the Federation. Fond du Lac Chief Louie Mercredi says, “Our communities are in desperate need of immediate full-time mental health support staff.” He says communities there get one or two counsellors who fly in for a few days a week. Mercredi says this suicide is the second firefighter the team has lost in the last three years.
