On the fast-pitch softball diamonds…
The Super-8 International Softball Under-14 Girls and Boys Super Series continues and winds up today at Bob Van Impe Stadium and Joe Gallagher Field. There is a New Zealand team in both the girls and boys draws. There are seven other girls teams from across Saskatchewan and two other Saskatoon boys teams taking part. Girls games go at 9 and 11 a.m. as well as 1:30 p.m. at Bob Van Impe Stadium and Glenn Reeve #3 diamond with the final at 4:30 p.m. at B-V-I. On the boys side, games are slated for 9:30 a.m. and noon with the final at 3 p.m….all at Joe Gallagher Field.
The Canadian Under-23 Men’s Championship continues and wraps up today in St. Leonard, Quebec. It’s playoff time. The Saskatoon Junior Diamondbacks were part of the eight-team field.
The Canadian Under-16 Boys Championship continues and concludes today in Innerkip, Ontario. It’s playoff time. The Saskatoon Selects were part of the nine-team field.
The Western Canadian Under-14 Girls and Boys Championships continue today and run through tomorrow in Edmonton. Nine girls teams are taking part, including the Unity Panthers. Six boys teams are competing, including the Delisle Diamond Dogs and Shellbrook Rangers.
The Western Canadian Under-19 Girls Championship continues today and runs through tomorrow in Unity.
It’s “Free Spectator Weekend” at Saskatchewan International Raceway (S-I-R). Today’s racing features Points Race Nine. Gates open to the public at 8 a.m. with racing from 9 a.m. to about 5 p.m.

The Canadian Football League is idle until Thursday when Week 9 of the season starts with Edmonton at B-C. The Saskatchewan Roughriders are off until Sunday, August 19th when they play host to the Calgary Stampeders. Game time is 5 p.m. at Mosaic Stadium in Regina. The Green and White have 3 wins, 4 losses for 6 points…good for 4th place in the West Division. Calgary has 7 wins, 0 losses for 14 points…good for 1st place in the West.
Hockey Canada’s Summer Under-18 Men’s Team is getting ready to take part in the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup. It starts tomorrow and runs through Saturday in Edmonton and Red Deer. The Canadian team includes a trio of Saskatoon Blades…goaltender Nolan Maier and centre Kirby Dach while Bridge City Bunch head coach Mitch Love is an assistant coach with Team Canada. The host nation’s first tournament test is Monday night in Edmonton against Switzerland.
