There was something fishy in the Town of Unity on the evening of January 2nd, and now the Ministry of Energy and Resources has completed its investigation.
Some residents of Unity noticed an odour which for some caused personal discomfort.
Based on evidence, the Ministry believes the likely source of the odour was a gaseous, caustic waste received at the Tervita Waste Processing Facility.
No serious or long term health effects are expected.
The investigation determined the caustic waste was not approved for disposal at that facility.
Tervita has been told to not accept these types of substances, which in this case was classified as a Transportation of Dangerous Goods Class 8 corrosive liquid.
Tervita must conduct a third-party engineering assessment of its waste processing and disposal system in the next 90 days, and develop a revised sampling procedure to ensure wastes received are in compliance with their licence.
