Construction on the first phase of Optimist Hill at Diefenbaker Park has officially begun as today was the official ground breaking ceremony at what will become a multi-purpose recreational park for residents to use year round.
The first phase which is scheduled to be completed by next winter and will include an enhanced toboggan area with an additional “little tikes” area for families with small children and plenty of space for skiers and snowboarders.
Throughout the summer, the plan is to turn the hill into a mountain bike terrain park.
During construction of the first phase, approximately 160 thousand cubic meters of dirt will be moved to the top of the current hill which will raise the height by 30 feet.
Co-Chair of the Optimist Hill project, Joe Van’t Hof says providing residents with both paid and free options once the first phase is complete is important as the plan was never to take away anything from the existing park so those who already use the hill will be able to continue using it at no cost if they so choose.
Co-Chair, Robert Letts says the prices at the park haven’t been determined yet but they will be relatively cheap to allow everyone to enjoy the park and that they’re working to create a rate for school groups.
Phase 2 of the project which will include a chalet is expected to be completed within the next two years.
