The Saskatchewan Advocate for Children and Youth is urging the province to address what he calls the over-representation of Indigenous youth in custody. Corey O’Soup references a Statistics Canada report that indicates 92 per cent of boys in custody and 98 per cent of girls are indigenous. O’Soup says, “We cannot continue to ignore the Truth and Reconciliation calls to action and must work harder to do better for these young people.” O’Soup calls the situation a, “crisis.” He says colonization and residential schools are the cause of inequities and injustices faced by Indigenous youth.
