Baseball sized hail and super cell tornadoes.
Those are two severe weather events that can happen in Saskatchewan and the hail in the Estevan area a week ago is proof of that.
Ryan Wunsch is a storm chaser from Leader.
He says tornado alley extends from the United States into Canada and through Saskatchewan, basically to the northern forested areas north of Prince Albert.
That doesn’t mean tornadoes are frequent in this province, it just means we can get them.
Earlier in the season, it’s the weaker landspout tornadoes, but once you hit around June 15th to mid-July, we can have super cell tornadoes.
It’s not the hot weather that causes them, though.
Wunsch says it all depends on what’s happening in the upper atmosphere, and tornadoes need moisture, possibly from planted crops or coming up from the Texas Gulf area.
Most of the tornadoes spotted in Saskatchewan have been around Regina and Moose Jaw, but Wunsch believes that’s just because it’s a more populated area.
He expects the southeast corner is the most active for big storms.
Over the years, there have been 58 documented tornadoes for Saskatoon and area.
