Some countries around the world have started producing small modular reactors and Doctor Mendoza of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories says provinces and territories here in Canada would benefit from using them. Mendoza says using small modular reactors would bring positive impacts such as creating jobs, increasing economic growth and increasing tax revenue. He adds provinces and territories would benefit the most from use of the reactors followed by municipalities then the federal government based on information from Statistics Canada that focuses on each province’s input and output model and tax structure.
Mendoza adds that if small modular reactors were to be used in Canada, that the existing nuclear fuel supply would most likely be used. A small portion of the supply chain does come from Saskatchewan says Doctor Mendoza. “We’re assuming that we’re going to take advantage of the existing nuclear fuel supply chain and the nuclear supply chain in Canada, a small portion of it goes to Saskatchewan through especially uranium, mining and milling and in the case of… we’re assuming for example in the case of fabrication and assembly, that would continue in Ontario.” Doctor Mendoza spoke earlier this week at the 38th Annual CNS Conference in Saskatoon.
