A Saskatchewan First Nation has been fined after being charged by Environment and Climate Change Canada. The Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation, north of Biggar, and band administrator Arnold Moosomin, have been sentenced in court for failing to comply with an environmental protection order. The order was made back in 2014 after an inspection to ensure compliance with the Storage Tank Systems for Petroleum Products and Allied Petroleum Products regulations. In 2015, charges were laid under the Environmental Protection Act. The First Nation has been fined $100 thousand and the administrator was fined $5,000.
Last month, the Big River First Nation was fined $100 thousand for failing to comply with an environmental protection order. Last year the Clearwater River Dene Nation was Fined $100 thousand and the Clearwater Store was fined $25 thousand for failing to comply.
Environment and Climate Change Canada says it is committed to maintaining clean air and water and protecting wildlife habitats.
