Developing a provincial gang strategy to help deter people from joining gangs will be the focus this week as government and community stakeholders come to Saskatoon for a three day forum starting today (tues). Doctor Robert Henry, a professor at the University of Calgary will be speaking a this week’s forum, he says the goals of the forum are to bring stakeholders together to understand what street gangs are, what street gangs activities need to be targeted and how to stop those activities. Henry says he’ll be speaking about how people have used the term gangs at the forum. He says his research has focused on looking beyond the criminal aspects of street gangs and to challenge the way people have come to understand street gangs and street gang behaviour in Saskatchewan. Doctor Henry adds that those attending the forum will use the knowledge that’s already in the province about street gangs and use that to build the strategy moving forward.
