It’s Bike to Work Day in Saskatoon. The aim is to give a tip of the hat….er, helmet, to people that regularly make cycling a part of their daily commute as well as to encourage people to give biking to work a try. I think it’s a great idea for those who are fit enough to ride a bike and those who are looking to get fit by riding a bike. Obviously there are some jobs that require driving to appointments and meetings during the workday which makes taking a bike to work problematic but for those who can leave home, go straight to the workplace, stay there all day and then go straight home, cycling can work during the warmer months. Back when I had a bike I never did ride it all the way downtown to work and even my bike riding days around the neighbourhood ended more than 20 years ago for no good reason. I simply stopped and my bike languished in the shed for years. For those who want to try taking a bike to work this is a good day to do it because there will be others doing the same thing and between 7 and 9am there are some local businesses and organizations with bike stations set up around the city offering refreshments, prizes and encouragement. And, of course, motorists should pay extra attention today with more cyclists on the road.
