Saskatchewan’s official opposition says cutting off applications on July 1st for the province’s rental housing support program is not a good idea.
NDP leader Ryan Meili says it will only hurt the poor and disabled.
Social Services Minister Paul Merriman says SaskHousing has a higher vacancy rate right now at 9 per cent, and those already receiving the support will continue to receive it.
He adds that a new federal program is in the works to help those who can’t find affordable housing.
Meili countered that despite higher vacancy rates, if you can’t afford a home you can’t afford it, no matter how many are vacant. (CKRM)
