The Saskatchewan Government and General Employees’ Union is calling on the province to stop the loss of academic and support staff at Sask Polytech. 22 staff were given layoff notices last week including five members from SGEU’s Professional Services Bargaining Unit which represents the schools non-academic staff. 20 other employees took voluntary buyouts. Last April there were 23 staff layoffs and earlier in the year, there were 43 more buyouts. Bargaining Unit Chair Bonnie Bond says, “For years, we’ve seen in-scope staffing levels minimized or cut back while out-of-scope managerial positions increased rapidly.” The union says that from 2010 to 2017, professional services jobs fell by 9.5 per cent while out-of-scope jobs rose 41.7 per cent.
The union says it rejects the claim that the newest round of layoffs and buyouts is driven by shifts in the labour market.
